Reflections of summer on Labor Day

The weather has definately shifted towards fall here in New England. The morning chill is so refreshing and welcomed. At the height of the day it is warm and toasty. The light in the fall is golden and the air is clear of haze and humidity. As much as I love the fall, and in my opinion it absolutely trumps summer, I am feeling summer was fleeting. We only got to the beach once. We usually plan our beach visit in the late afternoon to avoid high sun and enjoy the beach at a less crowded time. Rather than packing a lunch, we pack a dinner and stay until sunset. It is the best time to be at the beach.

We had a lovely family day, even if I was chasing the back sides of running and playing children to sneak some pictures. At the end of the trip, we have two tired kids expecting to stop for ice cream on the ride home and once their bellies are full, they're dunked in the tub to wash away the salt and sand and put to bed for a restful night's sleep.

Do I dare name my laptop Lemon?

I have the worst luck with computers. They just don't like me. I recently had a virus infect my laptop and this put me back (yet again) with blogging, digital photo organizing and scrapbooking. I'm starting to believe that some people are electrically charged correctly to deal with technology and others are not. My 'charge' seems to create havoc with computers and the computer literate friends that come to my aide have the right touch or electromagnetic compatibility to get the very same laptop to obediently follow their command. It makes me wonder. I am so far behind ever since I transferred my work to this laptop because of constant technical difficulties. It sure does put a damper on the creative juices. I hope to catch up with a post titled 'summer in review'. I'm trying to be a forward thinker and user of the latest and greatest technology, but I am no doubt challenged with it. I laugh at the techno-geeks (oops, rather the super smart friends that fix my computer) when they tell me to send the computer some love, but it seems to work for them everytime. Really? Just change my attitude? Hmmm, maybe I'll come up with a different name for my laptop. Any ideas?

Happy Belated Birthday America

It's a little after the fact, but I've wanted to post our 4th of July happenings, even if it's a little late. For the sake of having little children, in the past few years, we have stayed local for our 4th of July celebration. After a BBQ at home with some family and friends, we've headed over to the town of Wakefield's parade and perhaps later see the local fireworks. This year we decided venture into the city. It was real exciting to get back into the city to hear the Boston Pops and see amazing fireworks! I couldn't wait to share it with the kids. We had visitors here, our nephew Bryon and his girlfriend Lauren were up from Philadelphia so we wanted to show them the spectacular Boston 4th of July celebration. I promised it would be the best fireworks display they've ever seen. We had perfect weather, a perfect viewing location at the Cambridge side of the Charles river and some extra hands to help with the twins. It would be the first time Jackie and Zac have stayed up that late into the night, but so worth it!

Jac and Zac love their big cousin Bryon and girlfriend Lauren.

We were on Memorial Drive right in front of the barge.

I gave Jackie my DSLR to take her first crack at a picture, not bad!

We watched the moon travel across the sky as the sun lowered and night festivities began.

These guys continue to be best buds. It's really amazing to watch how they behave like a little old couple.

Here's mini-Me shooting Bryon and Lauren.
We staked our spot around 7 pm, had over three hours to kill before the fireworks started.

Thankfully big cousins helped little cousins stay entertained.

A few card games of Old Maid helped too.

Bryon and Lauren are two of the nicest kids I've ever met. We love when they visit.

Night finally came, the moon had shifted far to the right of the Hancock building, the Boston Pops concert was underway, Neil Diamond sang his tunes, we were ready to see one of the best fireworks show ever. I hope to add some firwork pictures taken by my friend Vega. Her photos came out far better than mine. In the meantime, check out this video I found on YouTube.

Jacquelyn's Mystery Ride

California Grampsy came to visit to join us in celebrating the kid's 6th birthday.
Birthday mystery rides were planned for each. Jacquelyn has expressed a curiosity for horseback riding. I'm thrilled she would like to try this as I was a horse crazed little girl, and still am! We arranged a horseback riding lesson for each of them followed by a picnic at the adjacent polo field to watch a work pal play polo. It was so exciting for me to have this surprise planned for the day.
Here they are with their instructor Shawna learning the responsibility and importance of grooming and caring for the pretty pinto pony named Pandy.

Jacquelyn and Zac were excited and maybe a little tentative for their ride. Neither of them wanted to be first, so we did a coin toss and Jackie won first ride. After this, there was no hesitation to get on and start.

Jackie was a natural getting on and finding her seat.

I felt such pride and joy watching my children experience the thrill of horseback riding.

Zac couldn't wait for his turn.

Shawna said the kids showed great potential and learned fast. She was a fabulous instructor!

Pandy was a sweet and gentle girl to give Jac and Zac a great first lesson.

We brought carrot treats to thank Pandy for her ride.

We said hello to all the horses in the paddocks and pastures. Yorkfield farm was beautiful.

Smiles were plastered on their faces all day. Horses have that affect on me too.

The horses were gentle and curious and I just love those velvety noses!

I never forget those childhood mystery rides and I hope my kids never do too.

I couldn't ask for a more perfect day, hanging with my family at a horse farm and taking photos of the whole experience.

Here is Rachel. I work with Rachel and she is a passionate polo rider. Thank you Rachel for helping me set up the day!

The day ended with a picnic while watching polo matches, and meeting some kind folks! At the end of the matches the kids got to run on the field to help stomp the divets, collect all the balls. Watching a polo match was a first for each and every one of us. I think the day was a success!

Zachary's mystery ride

For Jacquelyn and Zac's 6th birthday, we decided to give them mystery rides. When I was a kid, my parents would take us on mystery rides and I loved the anticipation and surprise of what was planned specially for me.
Since Zac is a fan of NASCAR, we decided to take him to a go kart race track.

The kids enjoyed the arcade, watching the big kids race on the big track, and of course seeing all the racing fanfare.

Here is Zac with his favorite Nascar dude, Dale Jr.

Jackie is up for the adventure too.

Mystery rides were a big hit. Stay tuned for Jackie's adventure!

Now We are Six

When I was One,
I had just begun.

When I was Two,
I was nearly new,
When I was Three,
I was hardly Me.

When I was Four,
I was not much more.

When I was Five,
I was just alive.

But now I am Six,
I'm as clever as clever.

So I think I'll be six now
for ever and ever.

Pen pals....remember those? Letters to Karen

If you are old enough to fall somewhere between the Baby boomer generation and generation X, then you know what a pen pal is. I had a pen pal when I was a girl. She lived in Canada. I forgot her name, though. I've always liked writing letters to friends and was a loyal responder. Letters have gone by the wayside and now we email, and younger generations text and twit. I've stuck with email, haven't moved to texting or twittering. I don't have the need for that. I am amazed how I've met people from all around the world via the internet and have become friends with them. In the past year or so, I've taken a lot of online classes having to do with digital scrapbooking and photography. Here is where I've met some wonderful women in China, Dubai, Florida, and Montana. I've started a pen pal relationship with my new found friend, Karen. She's the one in Montana. I've dubbed her Kountry Karen or for short KK. I've signed my emails 'Burbia Barbara or for short BB. Our lives are extremely different, yet we are having fun emailling back and forth. I would never have met her had it not been a common interest to learn the art of photography. Here is an email I sent this morning. I realized how writing a letter to someone who as asked, 'how was your week' is a wonderful way to journal the ordinary. I had to make it colorful as I sometimes feel like my week to week events are boring. Karen got a chuckle just as I do with her writings. Turns out TTYL means talk to you later....it's a texting thing.

KK,
Hi ! Hey, what is TTYL? I'm not up with the lingo. I really love hearing your 'day in the life of Karen, the wife of a rancher.....' so please do tell! You do have a life that is unique and fun to hear about. I feel like my life is not much of a unique one compared to yours, but I'll try to share in a colorful way. Before I do, I just have to say, I can only imagine how bittersweet it must be to brand the babies and send them on their way. I remember at my aunts and uncle's farm, having raised the animals and then the reality of having Tom the turkey for thanksgiving. I also remember my uncles raising chickens, and watching them go through the process of slaughter....it was a learning experience that few suburbia children see!!! My parents had a summer home on a lake close to these aunts and uncles. We would bring our home friends up to the lake and expose them to a taste of country life. Most of the kids hated the smell of manure or barns......something that I remember with fondness. Now I raise my kids in the town I where grew up. I live on a busy street. My kids walk about a quarter mile to school. We have a nice 25,000 sq foot plot with neighbors on every side of us. My folks live in the house I was raised in about a 10 minute walk away. We are close to my parents and they love taking care of their only grandchild ren. So we reap the benefits of that. I actually would love to move to my parents neighborhood to get off the busy street and be there when they are old and in need of support. One of the nights when I had just shared your pics with my husband, I was going to bed, lights out and heard some cars drive by, I thought of you and how you must hear complete silence at bedtime. So this week was a busy one. I worked an extra day to help out at the clinic as we are temporarily short staffed. My kids had a kindergarten concert to celebrate the end of the school year and it was adorable and gets me choked up. Jacquelyn was invited to a pink poodle party at Sugar plum parties. It was a just girls party as they had a tea party, played dressed up, had their nails and makeup done, had fashion shots done! So, Zac and I had a date. I took him miniture golfing and Zac got TWO holes in one and I got one hole in one. Zac loves golf and he's really good at it. Golfers at the driving range are amazed at his swing mechanics. I had such a great time with my boy. A mother/son bond is a surprise and gift to me. We went out for ice cream and picked Jackie up from her girlie party. We spyed in the window and saw a glimpse of girl fantasy land, Zac was invited in for cake, but he wanted nothing to do with entering the all girls parlor!! Jackie and Zac have only had a few invites to an all girl or all boy party and they each are sensitive to the one who is left out. I rarely have time with just one of them, so I tend to make a special date with the one left out. At the end of the party, the girls got to pick out a stuffed doggie, most of them picked a pink poodle. Jackie asked the host if she could take one home to her brother. She said there wasn't any beagles (Zac's dream is to have a beagle), so she picked out a german shepard to take home for Zac. She is the sweetest sister! I love my girl. She isn't a primadonna type girl. I didn't know how she would like this girlie girl party, but she blossomed and said she was the prettiest at the party. I think she loved all the sugar and spice. What I love best about my girl is she can also run with the boys. She is naturally beautiful and as she's been curious about mommy applying makeup, I tell her, I use make up to try to be as beautiful as she is without makeup. She likes dresses with sneakers so she can still play hard. She likes her hair long, but please don't fuss with it. She likes her nails painted but can't sit still long enough for them to dry before she's off to get her hands dirty. I think it's a perfect balance. The same day of the party, Jac and Zac had a tball game. Both kids are natural athletes. It's a pleasure to see these little 5 and 6 year old kids develop and improve. Of course I took pictures.....and admit in auto! I'll tweek them in photoshop. The other big focus in my life, right now, is working out. Since I hit my 40's and while being engrosed in computer time learning the world of digital scrapbooking as well as sitting on my growing fat ass to make and sell jewelry, I gained 20 lbs. I hated how this extra weight made me feel, tired and sluggish. So, for the past three months, I've been very disciplined with my workout and lost 10 of the 20 lbs! I want to lose 15 more to be comfortable with myself and I feel I can attain this! So, there's a taste of ' a day in the life of suburbia Barbara'. Hope you enjoyed as much as I enjoy a glimpse of you. Hey, you know, these correspondences are great journalling!!! I just might have to post it in my blog! Keep it coming, BB ( 'Burbia Barbara)
