Christmas All Wrapped Up

(Said with a sigh of relief), though we had a calm, simple, and relaxing holiday, just the type I can enjoy. The kids woke us up with words, "Mom and Dad, we were good this year, Santa gave lots of presents, come and see!" Jackie's toy list included an art set and other crafts she wanted like wikisticks. She was surprised with a bling name bracelet, American girl 'just like me' doll and a stamp and card making kit. Zac's toy list was Wii games. Along with his Wii resort, he got a magnetic dart board, rock tumbler and gemstone kit, and NASCAR fan stuff. They both got necessities like winter boots, hats and mittens. The biggest gift of all, came early this year, our beloved kittens.
Our Christmas traditions are not unique to most, but nonetheless, we all look forward to the annual rituals of visiting Santa then going out to dinner, and hunting for the perfect tree. I look forward to pulling out the holiday decorations to make our home feel festive. A new tradition was added. Mimi, Papa and a friend Megan decorated a gingerbread house to surprise us.

As a watch my kids excitement, it occurred to me that we are one of the fortunate ones who can partake in the joy of Christmas morning magic. We have the means to give gifts to our children. But more importantly, we have a family to create holiday traditions and memories. We are together, healthy and with jobs. I do feel sad for others who struggle with the basic needs of life because of 2009 hardships; soldiers away from family, the unemployed, homeowners losing their dwellings. It must be hard on these people to find joy during the season of Christmas gluttony. I am thankful we have all our basic needs met and then some.
